The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean research group participates in the UWA Open Day event on Sunday 30 March 2025
Members of the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean research group, led by Professor Dirk Zeller, volunteered at the University of Western Australia Open Day on Sunday, 30 March.
The event allowed parents, high school leavers, and future students to explore the UWA campus and talk to current students, academics, and graduates to learn more about studying marine biology and fisheries science at UWA.
UWA is ranked 1st in Australia for biological sciences (ARWU 2020) and ranked 24th in the world for biological sciences (GRAS 2024).
Dirk Zeller and his students and research team staffed the Marine Biology table as part of the School of Biological Science degree and resarch offerings. They engaged with and answered questions from parents and prospective students about fisheries and marine biology studies at UWA.
“Each year, the university holds an Open Day, and it is always great to meet so many families and prospective future students and to advise them in their decisions and guide them on their journey,” says Dirk Zeller.
The student-organised and run UWA Marine Biology Club was also in attendance through an active collaboration with Zeller and the other Marine Biology staff. Members of the Club volunteered their time offering students further insight into student life and study at UWA from students’ perspectives. They also showcased the social opportunities, job and industry night events and more, as well outdoor expeditions the Club organises for its members, including snorkelling sessions and whale watching trips.
